a stroll thru streetpass plaza

While modding my 3DS in the autumn of 2024, Streetpass Mii Plaza was one of the first applications I turned my eyes to. Being a game I had sunk many hours into over the course of my entire experience with the system, I was thrilled to learn that modern avenues existed to continue to streetpass tradition.

Now, two years after installing NetPass and fourteen years after opening the software for the first time, I have reached journey's end. Every puzzle piece collected; credits rolled on every game; I don't have the insanity required to chase true completion (nor do I even know if it's possible in a human lifetime to do so legitimately), but I have conquered a childhood obsession. Share it with me if you'd like.

Stray thoughts and data in the viewer below:

Thoughts:

Stats detailing 14 years of Streetpass. How do these stack up to yours? I wonder if the urban mii plaza experience is really as different as I always assumed it was?

The accomplishments are one thing that makes completion particularly horrifying. There are 98 in all, but some sources indicate that the ladder of tag-based requirements goes up to 1 million. Not to mention, the time it would take to 100% every game in the plaza would already be exceptionally longer than what I've played anyway.

Thoughts:

The heart and soul of Streetpass Mii Plaza. It's a grand puzzle hunt, and the game I most wanted to finish.

One interesting thing I recently discovered is the small pool of region-exclusive puzzles. Some make sense in hindsight, but the McDonald's and All Nippon Airways panels are bizarre, especially the Euro-exclusive 'Mario & Happy,' featuring one of the most iconic mascots of all time alongside one of the worst.

Thoughts:

They're fairly simple and stripped-down RPGs, but back when playing Find Mii was the only way to unlock customization for your Miis, they fulfilled an essential role.

My default hat as of the time of writing does not come from this game, but is actually the Jumbo Beef Hat that you get when purchasing Feed Mii.

This hat count statistic does not take into account the default outfit, (None).

Expansion Wave 1

Thoughts:

I love Gold Bone's design so much.

It can be challenging depending on how often you streetpass and how much of a tightwad you are with those play coins, but like everything in that first wave of add-ons, it brought something so totally new to the plaza that it's hard to complain. Nautilus Nest is my most nostalgic stage.

Flower Town icon
Journal Entries: 80/80 Plants Grown: 176 Guests: 1,543 Garden Expansions: 7 Fav Plant: Foxfruit Tickets: 22/22
Thoughts:

Can be relaxing but I fear for anyone going after 100%. Doing so requires not only getting all plant species, but also every possible color for each breed. I found the completion goals I set for myself to be quite time consuming, but I was happy that the requirements for this game's plaza tickets were easy in comparison to the other games.

Warrior's Way icon
Army Size: 9,999,999 Castle Rank: 20 Theme: Futuristic Visitors: 474 Battles: 221 Victories: 202 Emperor Defeated: x3 Tickets: 20/22
Thoughts:

Among my top games despite its simplicity. It has my favorite theming of the whole bunch.

I'm only missing the plaza tickets related to encountering a certain number of other people who own the game. I never played badly enough to get a critical strike, so for that achievement I had to strategically set myself up to lose in hopes of triggering the odds.

Monster Manor icon
Pieces Collected: 931 Floors: 55 Monsters Beaten: 345 Chests: 745 Team-Ups: 7 Puzzles Solved: 14 Fav Weapon: Windkeeper's Fury Tickets: 18/22
Thoughts:

The depth in this game is defeated by being basically inaccessible if you have a low streetpass rate. That is: puzzle boxes and team-up opportunities will never appear, and following through with a plan to make high-value chest rooms can take weeks.

That aside, the title succeeds in what it sets out to do and is an integral part of the first, core wave of games.

Expansion Wave 2

Ultimate Angler icon
Anglers Met: 850 Islands Cleared: 9 Species: 131/160 Rank: 27 Catches: 1,021 Rod Types: 24 Treasure Chests: 47 Fishing Trips: 162 Tickets: 20/22
Thoughts:

When you've got play coins to burn, this is potentially the best fishing minigame. Exceedingly simple and a lot of variety in how you can set your goals; my only complaint is that it takes so long in between outings thanks to the menus and intro/outro sections. Oh, and the requirements for getting mystery fish to appear may be a tad impossible (I only ever hooked one and didn't have the bait or power to reel it in).

Complaints aside, the developers did a great job at making the actual fishing part of the game feel satisfying. It can get so tense when you're down to the wire reeling in that fish you just know is the one.

Battleground Z icon
Survivors Met: 117 Stages: 26/26 Weapons Found: 18 Zombies Defeated: 1,695 Medals: 38 Fav Weapon: Wii Remote Tickets: 11/22
Thoughts:

I don't really care for beat'em ups but I do appreciate this title for bringing a type of gameplay that is wholly unique to the plaza. The worst part is when you get stuck with a weapon that doesn't jive with you, but thankfully the levels aren't long enough for it to be a serious issue.

Example of a game with good streetpass mileage: with enough skill, you can go far on just a single tag per level.

Expansion Wave 3

Cleared
Slot Car Rivals icon
Rank: S-13 Tracks: 19/19 Missions: 32/39 1st Wins: 21 Special Cars: 11 Fav Car: Antique Roadster
Thoughts:

The only game of this final wave to feel like an actual "game." I don't mind how one-dimensional a lot of plaza minigames can be because they generally have a strong aesthetic to fall back on, but Slot Car Rivals is the whole package and best of its class by default.

It's also cool how the game doesn't require you to come in first all the time to progress. The missions frequently have more to do with drifting well and avoiding falling off the track, which lowers the stakes and makes the game feel a bit more casual.

Thoughts:

The concept is ridiculously satisfying, especially once you get into the postgame and the ceiling for how much money you can make per round skyrockets. That said, after the initial rush it's fairly clear that the incremental game genre is better served elsewhere. It's fine for what it is.

By far the easiest game to 100% though.

Thoughts:

This game is nothing special. It's cute and has a ton of mouthwatering jumbo food models, but it's no surprise I initially dropped it early on after the third wave came out. It's also another one of those games that is especially grueling if you don't get more than two streetpasses regularly.

On the other hand, using the classic Find Mii games as a contextual wrap-around here is a sharp touch.

Thoughts:

It's not badly made but the Angry Birds franchise and its many imitators have forever tainted catapult-themed minigames with a shovelware bias; even if this does offer the unique gameplay twist of adjusting targets rather than trajectory, it's not enough to make this game memorable for me.

Explorers Met: 1,410 Steps: 1,318,785 Artifacts Found: 29 Animals Photographed: 45/75 Jungle Clear: 72% Ruins Clear: 70% Peaks Clear: 68%
Thoughts:

Mii Trek is a poorly thought-out game. But I like it.

The majority of the experience is spent watching walking animations and choosing directions at various forks in your path. It requires two separate playthroughs to get a conclusive ending to the story, which is completely half-baked. The amount of steps required to reach this goal is not only so excessive that >95% of players will never come close, but also relies entirely on the daily physical activity of strangers whom you have no influence over. Not to mention, the way dialogue is implemented is fundamentally unlike every other game, leading hasty players to accidentally skip half the lore that it does occasionally decide to dish out.

Still, Mii Trek has a zany charm. I like its B-movie-tier extraterrestrial plotline and Sir Henry Beaksley is far from the least memorable main NPC, even if I do find it kind of odd that he seems to get off on calling me 'old bean.'

Thanks to...

I played these games on a frivolous nostalgia trip, but I still think that it is important for access to these experiences to stay open, even if only for archival's sake. This endeavor was only possible thanks to the 3DS homebrew community and the hard work of many, many developers, including those who contributed to the original Nintendo Streetpass Mii Plaza during the official product lifecycle.

I give special thanks to the creators of NetPass and the FastPlayCoin homebrew applications, the two combined responsible for connecting me with hundreds of new mii users, and letting me obtain the thousands of play coins needed to finally finish these games.

The Mii Wiki was also an extremely valuable resource when it came to the fact-checking and asset hunting stages of developing this webpage. Thanks all!
